So, when I woke up this morning Harper Kate was really fussy, acting like something was wrong. She couldn't be comforted and I had no clue what to do. The day started off so negatively and I was so frustrated! Hence my negative Facebook post.
Yesterday, HK's breathing was still about 60x a minute which was much better than Monday. She was still on high flow oxygen with 8 liters and 40% room air. She slept pretty much all day yesterday and just looked like she didn't feel well at all. After her bath yesterday she perked up some and slept great during the night.
This morning when the doctor came in, she decided that since HK had no nutrition since Saturday she needed to eat. Harper Kate had still been gagging some and we weren't really sure why, so instead of pushing the formula through her g-tube the doctor decided
to put a PICC line in so that they could give her some nutrition TPN. This is basically IV fluids with some calories. That will start at 8:00 tonight so the angel will FINALLY start getting some calories . There's the feeding update!
Since HK had thrown up so much on Saturday, and since HK technically shouldn't be able to throw up (because she's had a fundoplication), her GI doctor wanted to get a procedure done to make sure that her fundo was still intact! So at 3:00 this afternoon, we headed down to radiology to find out that yes, it is intact!! YEA!! If it hadn't been intact, we might have had to get a different kind of feeding tube that I really didn't want!!! So.... Praise the Lord for that!! There is the GI update!
Earlier this morning I was pretty down and scared about HK getting the PICC line. It really isn't as big of a deal as I thought, but to me it sounded scary. Then, while I was holding Harper Kate, the crazy child yanked her IV out! She was REALLY testing me this morning. I looked down and my shirt and her hand was covered in blood....good grief! So, the nurse and PICC team came in, put some numbing cream on both arms and an hour later they returned ready to insert another IV and the PICC line. Since the PICC procedure has to be sterile I left and headed to get lunch from downstairs. I came back to a very happy child who didn't cry AT ALL during the procedure, was asleep because of some sleepy medicine they gave her. When she woke up, they did an X-ray to find that the line wasn't in the right place....seriously?!?!? Anyway, it was not as bad as I thought and it was EASY to fix, so now all is well with that!
Breathing and pneumonia wise HK is much better today!! She has gone from from 8 liters of oxygen down to 4 liters and she's on room air percentage wise which is great, but we have just had to increase her liters back to 6. It could just be because she's sleeping right now and her breathing gets more shallow when she sleeps. Anyway, all this information is for my medical friends. For those of you who aren't, SHE'S DOING BETTER!!! Hahaha. Honestly, I do feel like this afternoon that her antibiotics are finally winning the game instead of the pneumonia. Hooray! It will probably just take a couple more days for her lungs to adjust. Don't get too excited.... That's just me talking! No doctor has given me ANY IDEA of when we will leave. Fever is gone today which is also a great sign!!
Lastly, but the funniest and greatest of all is that after SIX days HK has finally gone poop!!! I know to many of you that's gross and totally unnecessary to include, but trust me all the nurses and mommy were celebrating!! Didn't even have to give her a suppository to help!! Go HK! I mean, that alone HAS to make her feel better! :).
All in all it has been a great day with ups and downs! I feel like Harper Kate has turned a corner, that she's starting to really perk up and that we are on the mend! Nana and Uncle Jack Jack came yesterday which I'm sure aided the feeling better process. It made me feel so much better just having some company! Thank you for spending half your day in the car just to sit with us for a few hours. It made a huge difference in all our attitudes.
Tonight, two more of my friends are driving 45 minutes to bring us dinner and chat. I know I say this all the time, but I am so so blessed!
I'll try to update tomorrow afternoon on the events of the day. Today was exciting, so I truly apologize for the long post!
In summary, I leave you with Psalm 126:3.
"The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy!".
Thank you from the depths of my heart,
Courtney

We're back...at the hospital :(
So, I was going to write her one year old birthday party post, since I'm still so far behind, but I'm sitting in the hospital with a child that has pneumonia. Yep, I'm here AGAIN!!! I must say I will be so glad when I finally catch up! I've found this program that I downloaded and I can turn this blog into a book to showcase her whole story, so I'm pretty excited about that.
Saturday was an exciting day!!! My sister, Mary Margaret, got married. Harper Kate, of course, was the flower girl and woke up Saturday with the stomach bug. I headed off to get ready, take pictures and enjoy the day. Jarod kept her and was in charge of getting her ready (and himself ready) and get to the church. Bless his heart! He called to tell me that HK was throwing up/gagging every three minutes. He was amazing through the day, handled it all, gave HK two baths and got her to the church(in the right clothes!) only ten minutes late! Impressive I know. If you know me, you know how hard that was to relinquish control of that day (especially the dressing of HK) :).
Anyway, she made it down the aisle looking like the earth angel that she is with no crying, her eyes opened and did great for the babysitter that night (minus more throwing up)!
Sunday, she woke up pretty lethargic and sleepy, but we all assumed she was exhausted from throwing up. We drove home Sunday and she slept ok until 4:00 am when she woke up with a high fever and rapid breathing. I thought she was breathing fast because of her fever, but looking back now I should have realized something else was going on. Needless to say, I called the pediatrician when they opened and we headed to the dr.
When we got there the nurse checked her oxygen level and it was 85%. Those of you who aren't familiar with all this, that means the level of oxygen in her body (I think this is what it means) was only 85% when it should be 100%. It was that low because she was struggling to breathe. They gave her some oxygen, a couple breathing treatments and did an X-ray of her lungs which showed pneumonia. At this point, our best guess is that HK aspirated some vomit on Saturday which has developed into pneumonia.
When the dr found the pneumonia, HK and I got a complimentary ride, via ambulance with lights and sirens, to the children's hospital! Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Hahahaha.....straight there!
Then, we spent a few hours in the ER while they evaluated HK and now we sit in the PICU waiting to see the doctor today for an evaluation report and plan of action!
Currently, HK is breathing about 80 times a minute, which is down from yesterday, but still VERY high. Her body is worn out, so she is getting oxygen to help keep her O2 level up and she is still having fevers because of the inflammation in her body. For my nurse and medically minded friends, her CRP level is 14. :). She is receiving two antibiotics through IV and is getting breathing treatments and deep suctioning to get the fluid out of her lungs.
How long will we be here?! I wish I knew, but my gut tells me that we won't go home tomorrow that's for sure. Hopefully not forever...:). Mommy goes crazy after a few days in here. Hahaha
Prayer list:
For her lungs to clear quickly
For Jarod to be able to focus at work and sleep well at home knowing that HK is safe and ok
For me to not go to insane up here in the room...hahahaha
For HK's breathing rate to go down
That she could get off her oxygen soon
That her fevers would go down and stop spiking up
I am always amazed at the response, love, and offers of help I get when she is in the hospital! Last night some dear dear friends went ro my apartment, packed Harper Kate and me a bag, then drove 45 minutes from Newnan to the hospital, brought the bag and dinner from California Pizza Kitchen, and visited with us. They then got my car key, drove 45 minutes back, picked my car up from the doctors office and took it to their home. By the way, these people have two kids and still sacrificed their time together and missed our small group to help us! We are so so blessed!!! It is a humbling experience that's for sure to have so much help, but I couldn't be more grateful. It is amazing to see how many people love and care for us and more importantly for our child! These are by no means the only people who have offered to help! We are overwhelmed with people who would change their entire plans to come do anything for us!!
I'll leave you with an excerpt from my devotion this morning! Appropriate? I think so!!! It's from Jesus Calling.
"Let Me help you get through this day. There are many possible paths to travel between your getting up in the morning and your lying down at night. Stay alert to the many choice-points along the way, being continually aware of My Presence. You will get through this day one way or the other. One way is to moan and groan, stumbling along with shuffling feet. This will get you to the end of the day eventually, but there is a better way. You can choose to walk with Me along the path of Peace, leaning on Me as much as you need. There will still be difficulties along the way, but you can face them confidently in My strength. Thank Me for each problem you encounter, and watch to see how I transform trials into blessings."
All I can say is AMEN!!!!!

Courtney

We are off the oxygen!!!!
Thank you for praying. We are off the oxygen, so one prayer request answered, but fever still spiked up so keep praying!!
Hospital visit update
Well, what can I say? I'm tired in every sense of the word. Emotionally, physically etc. I'll try to include all of the details here. I can't write Facebook statuses for all of this! Hahaha
Tuesday night HK started having a different kind of seizure for her. Her body started shaking mildly and when I gave the emergency diastat medicine, it didn't pull her out of it so we hopped in the car and drove (actually sped) to the ER which for us is about 45 min away driving fast. The seizure continued until we were about 10 minutes away and then stopped, but we drove on and got a room right away in the ER. They ran some tests and everything seemed normal. At about 2:00 am the doctors decided they were going to admit us to be watched overnight, so I sent Jarod home for sleep because he had to work the next day. HK and I spent the night on the ICU floor. She slept all night due to the seizure and about 4:00 am I went to sleep. Woke up about 8:00 the next morning and HK seemed to be fine, sleepy, but fine. The doctors came around and when the neurologist came by, HK had woken up grumpy and she was crying...she just needed mommy, but the neurologist knew that wasn't her 'norm' so he suggested that we be sent to floor 1 (where the epilepsy patients are) and be observed until the next morning. Uhhhh, so annoying but Jarod went ahead and packed the car for the beach and we figured we would drive in the morning and still have the weekend down there.
When Jarod arrived up at the hospital he felt like Hk had a fever. I had thought the same thing, but her temp was normal so I figured it was me. Got the nurse to check again, but again it showed normal. At this point she was breathing fast and we knew she had a fever but we couldn't get the nurse to do anything, so an hour or so passed and she was happy/talking etc.
She started having her normal eye twitch seizures, but they kept going and coming on again, so on top of the emergency diastat she had the night before and increased doses of her normal meds, they gave her adivan through her IV to treat the seizures. At that point, the nurse tried to deep suction her and get some mucus out but HK gagged, and threw up, but because of all the seizure medicine she was so out of it, that she couldn't get it up. So she started choking, couldn't get a breath, called in rapid response and we all of a sudden became that room where all the nurses come to! Oh my goodness, my child has to have ALL the attention all the time. Hahahaha.
So, where are we now?! When all of that drama happened we think that HK probably aspirated some of her throw up (I apologize to those of you with weak tummies). So, we now sit in the PICU with HK on oxygen, having fevers (due to the aspiration) and still having some eye twitch seizures. Don't have any idea when we will go home. The neurologist said this morning that he would like her seizures to be down before we go home, have to be transferred to a regular room first and obviously off oxygen. Luckily, we are well on our way to being off that!! Maybe even in the next few hours.
Yes, we are disappointed that we couldn't go to the beach. It was just the three of us and we were so looking forward to some rest and relaxation away from hospitals, doctors offices, work and therapy! We just wanted to play!! Oh well, the Lord had other plans for our Memorial Day weekend. This isn't the first time plans have been altered due to our drama queen of a child. :).
Thank you all for your love, prayers, offers of help and support. Please pray that HK can get off her oxygen soon, that her seizures would get under control, that her fevers would stop and there would be no infection! Please pray for Jarod and I to get some much needed rest and for a joyful heart in the midst of disappointment. This is a hard journey we walk, and EVERYONE has something in their life that causes hard times or disappointment. Today, I pray for a renewed spirit for all of you that are facing something difficult.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart,
Courtney

Month 12!!!! How did that happen?!?!
Oh my sweet little angel,
Mommy and Daddy cannot believe you are one year old! It seems like just yesterday that I was sitting in the NICU with you talking to you, watching your every move and praying we could take you home soon! Oh my word, look how far you have come!! When we left the hospital no doctor or nurse knew how you would do once you got home and all you have done is work hard and surprise every one of them! Mommy didn't know if she would ever get to enjoy your smile or hear your sweet voice and now we tell you every day how beautiful you are and you get the BIGGEST smile on your face!! You talk so much now that I'm not sure I want you to learn words. I think it might be frightening to hear the things you say! Haha.
You have ministered to so many simply through the way you work so hard and are so joyful while doing it. I pray that one day you will understand the significance of your life and just how many people you have touched. While you haven't met specific milestones on time, you have made beautiful progress and I know it will continue. This month I don't care as much about your weight, height or new things you are learning, but I choose to focus on what a picture of God's faithfulness you are to me. While there are so many days I don't understand God's plan for your life, I rest in the knowledge that He has one! While I do not know what your future holds, I know God has already ordained the days you will be on this Earth. While I do not know what developmental level you will achieve, I know you will be the happiest child and will not know the difference.
You have taught mommy to trust God even in the darkness, to love others unconditionally, to believe God has a plan for my life too, to live every day as if it were my last, and to live in the moment. The most important thing you have taught me is that God is in control of life, death, circumstances and all of it WILL bring Him glory!
We love you more than you could ever possibly know! Your twelve months have brought me the greatest joy in my life.
Love,
Mommy and Daddy

She's almost one...11 months!
Oh darling angel,
I cannot believe you are almost one. At 11 months old, you are surprising mommy and daddy every day. You haven't been feeling great lately, so your progress is getting slower, but you are taking great tastes of food by mouth, and continue to work on your neck. You have also stopped gaining weight, so you are still around 16 pounds, but topping the charts with length at almost 30 inches. You really don't like peas, but we are working on it. We went to the beach this month and started getting ready for your birthday. We can't wait to celebrate your first birthday!!
Most importantly this month, we celebrated Alabama's 14th National Championship!!! You were sick the day of the game and to be honest Mommy really didn't want to take you to the doctor, because I REALLY didn't want to watch the game in the hospital, but you are more important so off to the doctor we went. I actually took you in your pajamas. Can you believe that? Mommy never takes you anywhere without being dressed, but you really were sick. Anyway, this family came into the pediatricians office decked out in their purple and gold...I know, you were thankful you didn't have to wear those colors. Red looks way better on you! :) :). We headed to the lab to get your blood drawn, and when they were putting gauze on your arm, they almost put purple on. Mommy quickly asked them to find another color, just for today. So, off we went with red tape covering the gauze. :)
Dr. Jackson called later wanting us to come back in because your white count was so high!! Mommy FREAKED OUT, called Daddy and he headed to meet us at the dr. Mommy thought there was something seriously wrong, but Cookie quickly reminded me that I had to remain calm. So, I put you back in the carseat and headed back to the dr. After all that panic, we began the week long search of figuring out what was wrong. More on that in the next post. Mommy and Daddy took you home, got some game food ready and dressed you in the appropriate outfit. You fell asleep at the beginning of the game, which allowed mommy and daddy to concentrate. We pulled out the bottle of 30th birthday champagne my aunt and uncle gave me when Bama won!! After a couple glasses we put you to bed, but I think we were so focused on celebrating we forgot to take you out of your jersey. :). Don't worry HK, it's the first of a few championship games you will watch in your lifetime!
Here are some pictures documenting this month. The beach pictures have already been posted.

A trip to the hospital....
So, I mentioned in the last post that Harper Kate hadn't been feeling well and that it would take a week to figure out what was going on. Harper Kate had been getting random fevers that would spike up to 103. We couldn't really figure out what was going on, but what we did find was that her white blood cell count was incredibly high which meant that there was an infection somewhere. Dr Jackson did a chest X-ray which didn't show pneumonia, did a urine test and no infection there. We did more bloodwork which revealed no blood infection and the other option was meningitis, but since her fever hadn't been constant, that wasn't assumed either. HK is ALWAYS a mystery and difficult. :). She got two shots of (a strong antibiotic) in the middle of the week, and by Friday her count was still high. Dr Jackson had no other ideas, so he sent us to the children's hospital to see if they had any ideas. We spent a few hours in the ER, and after a much more detailed chest X-ray, they found a small amount of pneumonia. The ER dr knew exactly what to look for and his picture was much clearer, so he was glad Dr. Jackson had sent us there. We were immediately admitted and began an antibiotic through an Iv. That week had been pretty frightening because when her white count was so high, the nurse called me and told me Dr Jackson wanted me to come immediately because her count was so high! I panicked, cried the entire way to the office, thinking the worst and then had Jarod meet me there. Therefore, when we finally found out it was pneumonia you can imagine I was relieved!!
Unfortunately for me, Harper Kate was admitted on a Thursday night. For Christmas my sisters and I had given my mom a cooking class at the Viking Cooking School in Greenwood, MS. My dad paid for all of my sisters to go with my mom. Of course, Harper Kate would get sick on the weekend I was supposed to go! So, while i was sitting in the hospital waiting to be discharged, my sisters, mom and aunt (who took my spot) learned how to make fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, greens and biscuits. Uhhh.....why me?!?! Anyway, hopefully I will get to go sometime soon! My child is such drama sometimes, but still I wouldn't trade her for anything in the world!! At least we had some fun while we were at the hospital. Harper Kate loves being there! She gets pampered and has to do no therapy. :). Here are some pictures from our stay.
We got home late Friday night from the hospital and headed to bed. I was so upset from missing the cooking class, that when we woke up Saturday morning, Jarod asked me if I wanted to go to Birmingham to see my precious new niece that had been born that week! Well, I still hated missing the cooking class, but visiting Jarod's family and Harper Kate meeting her first girl cousin made it a lot better. My husband knows me so well! Seeing my family always makes everything better!!
